Running a small business or a start-up is hard enough without the social media goalposts constantly shifting. For years, organic social was the great equaliser; it was the best way to get your brand out there and drive traffic without needing a massive corporate marketing budget.
But if you have been staring at your company’s Facebook page lately, wondering why your organic results have suddenly dropped and feeling like organic marketing is becoming just as hard (and expensive) as paid ads, you aren’t imagining things.
Meta has quietly rolled out a brand-new policy that is leaving business owners feeling a little… un-linked.
Let’s break down exactly what this new rule is, where you can still post links in late 2026, and how to pivot your strategy so your start-up can keep growing.
The 2-Link Rule: What is actually going on?
Meta has begun rolling out a controversial restriction that could significantly affect how businesses use Facebook. Some Facebook Pages are now limited to just two organic posts or comments containing external links per month unless they subscribe to an eligible paid Meta One plan.
The change is still being tested and hasn’t reached every business Page yet, but it is already forcing affected organisations to rethink how they drive website traffic from Facebook.
For the Pages caught in this test, it is a hard block. When you try to publish or schedule a third post with a link using Meta Business Suite or the standard Facebook interface, a pop-up will appear stopping you from posting it at all.
Why the sudden cap? Because Meta wants users to stay on Meta. They want their app to be a destination, not a departure lounge.
“But wait,” you might ask, “can’t I just use a scheduling tool like Sprout Social or Hootsuite to bypass it?”
Could a third-party scheduling tool provide a workaround? Possibly, at least for now. Sprout Social reported in October 2026 that it had not seen the new limits affect posts published through its platform. However, this is still an evolving test, and there is no guarantee Meta won’t extend the restrictions to third-party publishing tools.
The only official way to bypass this restriction within Meta’s own tools is by paying up. But do not think a basic subscription will save you. Meta One launched in September 2026, and the pricing tiers are steep. The ‘Essential’ plan ($14.99 a month) keeps you stuck at 2 links. You have to fork out for the ‘Advanced’ tier at $49.99 just to get 8 links, or pay $499 for the ‘Max’ tier to get unlimited links! For a small business, this is a frustrating new expense.
| Meta One Plan | Number of posts or comments with links per month |
|---|---|
| No subscription (Free) | 2 |
| Essential plan (USD $14.99 per month) | 2 |
| Advanced plan (USD $49.99 per month) | 8 |
| Expert plan (USD $149.99 per month) | 20 |
| Max plan (USD $499.99 per month) | Unlimited |

The Loophole: How to still post links for free
If you refuse to pay a massive monthly fee just to share your own website, you have to get creative. However, be warned: the old “link in the first comment” trick no longer works as a cheat code on Facebook. For affected Pages, any link your page drops in the comments counts towards your monthly quota.
There is one exception. Meta’s published guidance indicates that if your main post already contains a link, additional links in the comments of that specific post do not count against your allowance.
Here are a few other ways you can still drive traffic:
- Facebook Stories: Link stickers in your Stories can direct users to external websites without counting towards your feed post allowance.
- Update Your Page Info: Keep your website link and action button updated on your main Facebook Page and actively encourage visitors to click them.
- Keep it in the Family: Links pointing to other Meta-owned platforms (like your Instagram, a WhatsApp chat link, or a Threads post) are exempt from the cap.
What Other Platforms Still Allow External Links in Oct 2026?
If you are tired of Meta’s pay-to-play games, are there any other platforms still welcoming your URLs for organic growth?
- LinkedIn: Unlike affected Facebook Pages, LinkedIn currently has no comparable monthly limit on external links. While posts containing links can sometimes attract lower reach, there is no hard proof that it affects post performance. Test different approaches and focus on sharing content that provides genuine value to your audience.
- Pinterest: The absolute champion for product-based businesses and blogs. Every pin is fundamentally designed to be a visual link to an external site.
- Threads & Bluesky: Meta’s text app Threads still allows links without a strict business quota (for now), while decentralised platforms like Bluesky are practically built on an open-web philosophy where links flow freely.
- Substack Notes & Reddit: Tread carefully here. While these communities can thrive on helpful links, many subreddits actively discourage promotional links and self-promotion. Suitability depends heavily on the individual community, so only share if you are adding genuine value.
